Research Survey: D3, D4, DH1, DH2 Responses Needed

Dear colleague,

Our names are Rachel Rhoney, Leah Eby-May, Jessica Collett and Nicholas LaPere. We are actively completing our Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene at University of Detroit Mercy. We are asking for your participation in this survey that is being conducted as a part of our senior research project for the University of Detroit Mercy. Our faculty advisor is Sally Ammar, RDH, BSDH, Clinical Lecturer.

The purpose of this survey is to assess the knowledge of different dental healthcare professionals on effectiveness of probiotics. Research on effectiveness of oral probiotics in dentistry is not well studied. This study is useful to explore the knowledge or lack thereof in dentistry regarding probiotics and their recommendations to patients.

Participation in this survey is voluntary and all responses will be confidential and anonymous. This survey consists of eight questions and will take approximately five minutes of your time. Completion of this survey acts as your consent to participate. If you would like to discontinue your participation in this study, you may exit the survey any time before submitting. Your responses will not be retained if you exit before the completion of the survey. Please click here to access the survey: https://udmercy.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_25jEsmzkMIHdt2Z

If questions arise before, during or after completing the survey, please contact Rachel Rhoney at rhoneyre@udmercy.edu. For reference please print off a copy of this consent statement for your records. The Institutional Review Board has approved this study: (Protocol #2021-06).

Thank you for your participation.

Sincerely,

Rachel Rhoney, Leah Eby-May, Jessica Collett and Nicholas LaPere

School of Dentistry Student Update Meeting This Thursday

The School of Dentistry will hold a meeting open to all students with an update in regards to COVID-19 policies and general updates for this academic year. The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 22 from 7:30-8:30pm on Blackboard Collaborate. Collaborate has modified large-group session settings and does not allow chat messages to be sent by participants during sessions with large numbers of participants. Please submit questions you would like addressed on this form by Thursday, October 22 at noon: https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=2MKkyGi9ukC4tnUivppxcUyYRvzKJgxJnHvfqTjvkddUNktIQk9MV1A1WVdTNkpWMkVHTDk5V1IyTC4u.  Class-specific questions will generally not be answered at this meeting as all School of Dentistry students are invited to attend. We understand some students may have conflicts and do plan to record this meeting.

On-Campus Eating

At this time, the only designated location where indoor eating is permitted is the cafeteria area on the 2nd floor of the clinic building. This area is prioritized for use and is appropriately designed for enhanced cleaning protocols. Therefore, it is the only location approved for indoor group eating on campus at this time.

This is consistent with a recent publication that has associated close quarters eating with an increased risk of COVID-19 transmission. Findings from a case-control investigation of symptomatic outpatients from 11 U.S. health care facilities found that close contact with persons with known COVID-19 or going to locations that offer on-site eating and drinking options were associated with COVID-19 positivity.

Adults with positive SARS-CoV-2 test results were approximately twice as likely to have reported dining at a restaurant than were those with negative SARS-CoV-2 test results.

Individuals eating in the cafeteria must maintain social distancing protocols and wear masks when not actively eating or drinking. When finished, please leave this space to allow others to use the area for the primary purpose of eating.

Individuals with private offices are asked to eat in their office to reduce the volume of individuals using the shared cafeteria space for eating. Classrooms, Special Functions Room, the 4th Floor Student Lounge, and shared kitchen/lounge spaces within academic divisions are not to be used for eating or drinking.

Virtual showing (must register by 10/23): “Picture a Scientist” on Oct 26 @ 8pm

The documentary “Picture a Scientist” is being made available through the ReBUILDetroit program, virtually on October 26 at 8:00 pm.

(Register by Friday, Oct. 23)

PICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries – including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists – who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

PICTURE A SCIENTIST was an official selection of the 2020 Tribeca Film Festival, postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The film’s virtual theatrical run reached 47 theaters across the USA in June 2020, and raised money for two organizations advancing women of color in STEM.

Updates from the Office of Student Services & Enrollment Management

  • As of October 5th, the School of Dentistry Library has reopened for limited hours. Library Hours are posted, as are social distancing requirements. We will continue to monitor library usage and hope to provide additional hours as we move forward with the fall and winter months. https://libraries.udmercy.edu/dental/
  • Printing Services are available by special request only at the School of Dentistry Library on a limited basis. Library administrators are working to make printing services more widely available for students soon. When there is an update, we will communicate this information.
  • The 4th Floor Student Fitness Center will remain closed until further notice. We will continue to assess the availability of required sanitization services, monitoring, and staffing to be able to open the fitness facility at the School of Dentistry. Updates will be communicated as available.
  • Earlier this week, Crystal Becker sent out an announcement from the Office of the Dean regarding eating on campus. Most importantly, the only designated location where indoor eating is permitted is the cafeteria area on the 2nd floor of the clinic building. This area is prioritized for use and is appropriately designed for enhanced cleaning protocols. Please make sure you adhere to stated rules regarding eating on campus.

Thank you for your collaboration and cooperation as continue to observe enhanced social distancing, PPE protocols, and policies for COVID 19 symptom monitoring and reporting. Your efforts are critical in maintaining the health and safety of our entire campus community.

Gathering for Reflection and Community Building

Wednesday, October 21 at 12pm

Via Zoom

The Office of Mission Integration once again invites you to join colleagues and friends for an hour away from the busyness of work and life in general to reflect and re-center.

Through individual reflection and small group sharing, we hope to create a virtual community to sustain us through these challenging times and enable us to stay connected even as many of us remain physically distanced.

The program is open to all employees of all faith persuasions and will draw from the rich spiritual wisdom of Ignatius of Loyola and Catherine McAuley. At this Zoom gathering, participants will be introduced to use the Examen. The Examen is a prayer form that invites you to review your day to become more aware of the movements of your spirit and your attunement to God at work in your day.

Join us for this gathering using this Zoom link and sign up for the series here.
