Reminders for Upcoming Weeks

As we enter the final weeks of the election season, we want to acknowledge the excitement and intensity surrounding many of the issues in our social, environmental, and political climate today. In addition to all learning to adapt to the continued presence of the COVID 19 pandemic, this election season is unique as we all navigate how to engage in activism in a socially-distanced, and largely virtual, manner. As a university campus community, we want to offer a few reminders for employees and students:

  • Our mission as a Jesuit and Mercy institution calls for education which integrates “intellectual, spiritual, ethical, and social development” of our students. Respectful dialogue and professional communication must be upheld when engaging in expressions of diverse thoughts, ideas, and opinions.
  • The School of Dentistry outlines professional conduct expectations in the Academic Policies Handbook. In addition, the University Social Media Policy includes guidance on appropriate use of social media for the campus community. Both can be found here: https://dental.udmercy.edu/_files/pdf/Academic_Policies_Handbook.pdf
  • Currently, events and social gatherings are not permitted at the School of Dentistry in alignment with our COVID 19 protocols and in accordance with campus, local, and state guidelines. We ask that all individuals are mindful of appropriate social distancing, mask protocols, and other risk-management practices to reduce the risk of COVID 19 exposure when engaging in activities outside of the School of Dentistry campus.

Faithful Citizenship: An Invitation to Vote

Office of Mission Integration

An Invitation to Vote

An authentic faith – which is never comfortable or completely personal – always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better that we found it. We love this magnificent planet on which God has put us, and we love the human family which dwells here, with all its tragedies and struggles, its hopes and aspirations, its strengths and weaknesses. The earth is our common home and all of us are brothers and sisters. If indeed “the just ordering of society and of the state is a central responsibility of politics”, the Church “cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice”.

–Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, par. 183.

With just a little over a week left to cast ballots, the Office of Mission Integration would like to remind you of some resources for discernment for those who have not yet voted. Below are possible aids in your reflective consideration of how you will vote in this election.

Contemplation and Political Action is a civic engagement guide released by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits).

Voting Catholic is a podcast series produced by America Media, publisher of America Magazine, which describes itself as “the leading provider of editorial content for thinking Catholics and those who want to know what Catholics are thinking.”

Forming Conscience for Faithful Citizenship is a document released by the US Conference of Catholic Bishops.

For those who are eligible, please do cast your vote by November 3. While the deadline for on-line registration has passed, for those still not registered, it is not too late. You have until November 3 to register and vote. For more information and additional resources, visit https://udmercy.edu/community/vote.php
