National Alliance on Mental Illness-In Our Own Voice presentation 2/13

All members of the Detroit Mercy community are welcome to attend the National Alliance on Mental Illness-In Our Own Voice presentation taking place on

February 13th 2020 from 6:30-8:30PM in CHM 114.

This event is hosted by the McAuley School of Nursing Wellness Center and University Suicide Prevention Committee.  The presentation is supported by a Mission Micro Grant.

In Our Own Voice (IOOV) is a unique public education program developed by NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), in which two trained speakers share compelling personal stories about living with mental illness and achieving recovery.  The speakers take their audience on a journey discussing their dark days, acceptance, treatment, coping skills and successes, hopes and dreams.

IOOV is an opportunity for those who have struggled with mental illness to gain confidence and share their individual experiences of recovery while raising awareness and reducing stigma in their communities.

At the end of the IOOV presentation, audience members are encouraged to offer feedback and ask questions. The more audience members become involved, the closer they come to understanding what it is like to live with a mental illness and stay in recovery.

IOOV presentations are given to individuals who are dealing with a mental illness, students, law enforcement officials, educators, providers, faith community members, politicians, professionals, inmates, and any interested civic groups.

Kristen Carney, Personal Counselor, from the Wellness Center will be leading a post presentation discussion about campus resources.

This event is an excellent opportunity to create awareness within our community of the isolation and disparity experienced by individuals and families dealing with mental illness.
